Chrysler Airs Jeep, Ram Ads In Tribute to Soldiers, Farmers

It was one of the vital anticipated commercials of Super Bowl XLVII, and it was shrouded in tight-lipped secrecy until it actually aired right after the halftime show. All anyone knew was that Chrysler had bought a niche. Now we all know what it’s.

The ad starts out with a gloomy screen and an orchestral soundtrack, with the words “We wait. We are hoping. We pray. Until you’re home again,” attributed to Oprah. The ad goes on with scenes of homey, familiar surroundings corresponding to family meals, dogs waiting to be walked, and youngsters taking baths.

It goes on, “You’ve been missed, you’ve been needed. You’ve been cried for, prayed for. You’ve been the explanation we press on.” The ending line is: “When you’re home, we’re greater than a family. We’re a nation, this is whole again.”

At the tip of an ad, the URL of a mini-site for Jeep’s Operation S.A.F.E. Return initiative is wear-screen. The project, done along with the United Services Organization (USO) is a fund providing financial, in-kind and hands-on support for returning troops. Jeep’s direct support of the initiative includes the availability of Jeep vehicles at USO centers, an army incentive toward the acquisition of a Jeep vehicle, homecoming celebrations and other activities, and monetary support of the USO for care of injured troops, families and caregivers.

The ad was in stark contrast to the more humorous, light-hearted fare that characterized some of the other car commercials. While a moving tribute to our nation’s troops, and a feel-good patriotic spot, we’re undecided if it’s going to have the impact of the 2011 “Born of Fire” ad showing a battered Detroit and starring Eminem and a Chrysler 200.

But it wasn’t the only real spot Chrysler purchased for this year’s Super Bowl. Later within the game, the “Farmers” ad aired, using a speech by the famous radio broadcast personality Paul Harvey as a tribute to farmers, and a part of the Ram brand’s support of Future Farmers of America. Of the 2, we feel the “Farmer” spot could have more impact and endurance. What do you think
