Greater Godzilla: Tuned Nissan GT-R Chases Sub-10-Second Quarter Mile in Ignition
Though the stock Nissan GT-R is already one of many fastest-accelerating vehicles available on the market, tuner AMS has created an excellent more powerful monster with the AMS Alpha 12 GT-R. On this episode of Ignition, associate road test editor Carlos Lago gets seat time with the blisteringly quick AMS 12 GT-R, pushing it up and down the drag strip for you to reach the quarter mile in under 10 seconds.
Looking like a stock GT-R, but delivering double the punch, the AMS GT-R boasts upwards of 1500 hp. Recognizing that’s an intense amount of power for a GT-R, Lago gets the inside track from AMS Performance founder Martin Musial, who admits the team faced challenges in building the beast. To make a better Godzilla possible, the team used custom-made components to deal with the torque, and installed a brand new ECU. At the track, the GT-R had difficulty hooking up, but Lago pushed it from 0-60 mph in 2.7 seconds, and to the quarter mile in 10.0 seconds at 146.7 mph. Lago, still not satisfied, went for one more run. Launching it at a stronger RPM, the Alpha GT-R hit all marks faster, clipping 0-60 mph in 2.5 seconds, and the quarter-mile in 9.8 seconds at 148.3 mph.
How is all that power applied to the floor so effectively The Alpha GT-R starts by launching at 4100 rpm, and using super-wide rear tires that chirped with each gear change. Lago further breaks down the science of the Alpha 12, and admits he hardly had any time to achieve what was occurring because he was too eager about hitting shifts and making steering corrections. After passing the quarter mile, Lago kept his foot in it until 170 mph, partly because he didn’t realize the run was over, but in addition because he enjoyed driving one of several fastest street legal GT-Rs on the earth. Wouldn’t you do the same
