MT Poll: Audi S7 vs. BMW 650i Gran Coupe vs. Mercedes-Benz CLS550

In our newest comparison, we chose one winner among a trio of cars we wouldn’t mind parking in our garage: the Audi S7, BMW 650i Gran Coupe, and the Mercedes-Benz CLS550. If you can read the reasoning behind our ranking of those stylish luxury four-doors within the comparison test here, we’d prefer to know which you’d most want to drive.

Inside the last year or so, things have changed for CLS, but not for the simpler. The last time we featured it in a comparison, it took the pinnacle spot, but it’s a unique story this time around. With all-wheel drive and a 402-hp 4.7-liter twin-turbo V-8 (biggest displacement engine of the test), the CLS550′s 0-60 mph and quarter-mile times were the slowest, with 4.4 and 12.9 seconds at 110.6 mph. The 445-hp BMW Gran Coupe bested the CLS, however the Audi took it away, reaching 60 mph in 3.9 seconds and the quarter in 12.3 seconds at 112.1 mph. “Pretty astonishing for a 4435-pounder with the smallest displacement engine of the test, a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 that’s probably underrated at only 420 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque.”

While the S7 also shined on winding roads, the BMW wasn’t far behind. “The car has nice moves, but it’s just not as sharp because the Audi,” said executive editor Ron Kiino. “However, it’s plenty sharp. Weight is a controversy in sharp corners, obviously, but not that much of a subject.”

Taking all factors into consideration, including its spectacular interior and elaborate stitching, we agreed the Gran Coupe offered the full package on this comparison. The S7 earned second place, and the CLS finished third. But with this group of coupe-like four-doors, there’s hardly a loser. “I feel justified and factual in stating that today’s “loser” (for loss of a softer synonym) might just be the most effective third-place finisher in Motor Trend history. I’d be thrilled to awaken and find its keys in a bowl near my front door.”
