Scion FR-S Convertible Coming Toyota FT-86 Open Concept Debuting in Geneva
The Toyota FT-86 Open concept debuting on the 2013 Geneva Motor Show next month confirms rumors that the automaker is thinking about a production GT86 convertible, that may be sold because the Scion FR-S convertible within the U.S. While Toyota is much from admitting a production FR-S convertible can be made, the automaker says the FT-86 Open concept is the way to gauge public reaction to the assumption while engineering continues on a prototype.
From the sketch previewing the FT-86 Open concept, it sounds as if the thought retains the FR-S’ four-passenger seating arrangement. If a Scion FR-S convertible is given the golf green light, it is going to be powered by the identical 200-hp 2.0-liter boxer flat-four engine because the coupe, offering six-speed automatic and manual transmissions.
The Mazda Miata would likely be an FR-S convertible’s closest rival. Unlike the Miata with its operated by hand soft-top or power-operated folding hardtop, if an FR-S convertible ever reaches U.S. dealerships, we might expect it to take advantage of an influence-operated soft-top. Like most coupes-turned-convertible, a production version of the FT-86 Open concept would probably weigh greater than a similarly equipped coupe as a result of extra chassis bracing.
Also coming to the Geneva Motor Show are the Toyota i-Road concept and Auris Touring Sports wagon. Toyota describes the i-Road “as a compact, fun, and emissions-free personal mobility concept, designed to give quick and efficient urban transport for 2 people.” We last saw the Auris Touring Sports wagon on the 2012 Paris auto show.
